Our first concert! We're proud to present a great repertoire of contemporary and living African-American composers. This program features diverse works by Indiana University Jazz Professor David Baker, of California-based composer Charles Washington and Chicagoland's very own Kimo Williams, a recognized professor at Columbia College.
Each has sounds of the African-American experience, including harmonies and rhythms that are fused into a traditional string trio and quartet format. In very different ways, each has created new and musical ideas.
A view of European influence on music, this program presents works for the string ensemble that represent the influence of Russian composers who immigrated to the United States, many of whom settled in California.
The works of Prokoviev and Rachmaninoff have a continuing presence and influence in contemporary American chamber music.
Each composer played a pivotal role in the transition from the the Romantic to the Modern era.
This program presents 20th century composers who meld traditional Western European classical music with music of the new American century. George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein and Samuel Barber reflect the beginning, middle and late part of American composition at the turn of the century.
Each of their works represent their own artistic development early on and foretell the excellence found in their more mature works. From Gershwin to Bernstein, to Barber, these historic composers collectively made a significant impact on what is considered today as traditional American music literature.
